A Texas school suspended a student for singing the Halloween song “Happy Halloween,” saying she was not singing the song to entertain students.
The student, 15-year-old Janae B. Johnson, who was suspended for the song, told WFAA-TV on Tuesday that the principal had said that she would not sing it, and that she was in class to study chemistry, not to sing.
The principal, who is also the principal of a nearby public high school, told The Dallas Morning News that the song was sung by students as part of a Halloween tradition and that it was “not a Halloween thing.”
The principal added that the school did not have a policy prohibiting students from singing the holiday song.
Johnson was suspended at her school because she didn’t sing the song during Halloween, which began Saturday.
Johnson, who grew up in nearby Beaumont, Texas, said she did not know why she was being disciplined.
